How does the heat pump system work? How is it so energy efficient?

Heat pump water heating systems work in a similar way to reverse-cycle air conditioners when they are run on a heating cycle, but heating water instead of the air inside your premises.

These systems are also known as “air-source heat pumps” because the heat is generated from the surrounding air. While heat pump systems do not require an electric or gas booster, they do use electricity to operate the evaporator fan and compressor in the water heating process.

Since heat pumps transfer heat from one place (air) to another (water), and no extra energy is used to create new heat, it is up to 4X more energy-efficient than the traditional electric water heaters.

Heat pump hot water system draws thermal energy from the surrounding air (even when it’s a rainy or cold day!)

Heat flows through the condenser coils that transfer the heat from the air to cold water in the tank

Warm air is compressed, increasing its temperature and heating the water up

Cold air is released from the system, and piping hot water is stored in the tank – ready for you to use!

Why does the heat pump need to be outside?

Heat pump systems require adequate airflow, very similar to a split system air-conditioning unit, which is why they need to be installed outside.

For upgrades at business or commercial premises, the heat pump can be installed in an indoor space with at least 60 square meters or 80 cubic metres (for example, warehouse space with high ceilings)

I'm renting, can I still get an upgrade?

Yes, as long as we have approval from your landlord and your current system is eligible for the upgrade.

Can I get an upgrade for my holiday/investment property?

Absolutely! We do need to see a few photos of the existing hot water system and electrical switchboard to confirm that it’s eligible for the upgrade, so make sure you take some photos the next time you visit that property.

I live in an apartment, can I get this upgrade?

Unfortunately, the heat pump requires plenty of space outdoors which is often not feasible in individual apartment units.

However, if your apartment building has central water heating that is shared by the whole building, we can potentially look into it. Please advise your building or strata manager to get in touch with our team directly at enquiries@greenguys.com.au or 1300 511 875.

Are the installers qualified tradespeople?

We partner with your local electricians and plumbers who are licensed and qualified to install heat pump hot water systems.

All of our installations are done under the strict guidelines of the Victorian ESC (Essential Services Commission), Victorian Building Authority (VBA), Energy Safe Victoria (ESV), NSW IPART (Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal) and New South Wales Fair Trading. With each hot water upgrade, we provide a document specific to the address, stating that the installation is compliant.

Is the heat pump water heater noisy?

Our heat pumps are engineered to operate at low noise levels – nothing more than the noise level of the air-conditioning unit outside your house.

I have solar PV panels, will this affect the heat pump?

Our heat pumps come with a built-in timer so you can set the water heater to run only during your peak solar generation timing (i.e. 10 am–4 pm). This means that the heat pump will be operating on your solar-generated electricity, reducing or even eliminating the cost of heating your water each day.

Many homes are not fully utilising solar-generated electricity and the excess power is sent back to the Grid. The solar feed-in tariff, which is the amount you get for the excess power, is reducing rapidly. This UNSW study finds that it is best to store excess solar in a thermal form in your hot water storage tank compared to a battery. No need for a $10,000 battery storage or an electric vehicle to store your excess solar energy!
